Brisbane Lifesaving Service awards night

Surf Life Saving Queensland’s ground-breaking Brisbane Lifesaving Service (BLS) recently held its annual awards night, recognising the dedication and special achievements of its members.

It’s been a milestone year for BLS which has recorded significant growth since its inception and launch back in 2011.

BLS now has 141 members, representing a 62 percent growth in members since 2012-13. Importantly, this growth in membership has enabled patrolling activity to significantly increase, with 1,962 volunteer patrol hours in 2012-13 growing to 3,192 hours this season.

Impressively, 13 BLS members performed more than 100 volunteer patrol hours this season with four of these performing in excess of 200 hours.

Congratulations to the following award recipients:

  • BLS 2013/14 100 hours plus – Jessica Hallett, Catherine Brandit, Mardee Kassulke, Jake Marcus, David Bazataqui, Kris Dempster, Peter Hallett, Donna Walls and Jason Walls

  • BLS 2013/14 200 hours plus – Jade Cooper, Helen Hallett, Sally Louise Williams and Gary Patterson

  • BLS Patrol Service Award for the highest number of patrol hours – Gary Patterson (284.8 hours)


  • BLS First Year Member Award 2013/14 – Morgan Knowles and Kris Dempster


  • BLS Trainer of the Year – Peter Hallett


  • BLS Assessor of the Year – Laurie Cavill


  • BLS Water Safety Person of the Year – Gary Patterson


  • BLS 2013/14 Volunteer of the Year – Jade Cooper


  • George Hill Brisbane Lifesaver of the Year Award – Matt Hesse
