Currumbin SLSC win the 2019 Queensland Youth State Surf Life Saving Championships

Currumbin has successfully defended their title to win the 2019 Queensland Youth State Surf Life Saving Championships in dominant fashion.

Having led the event from early on Day 1, Currumbin stormed home with a total of 382 points – 121 points ahead of their nearest rival, Alexandra Headlands (261).
North Burleigh (222), Northcliffe (198) and Maroochydore (170) rounded out the top five.

Surf Life Saving Queensland (SLSQ) Sports Manager Stuart Hogben said the three-day event had showcased and celebrated the athleticism, sportsmanship and comradery of more than 1,600 nippers.

“Spectators were treated to some amazing victories, with our Under 11’s through to Under 15’s serving up no shortage of action,” he said.

“All participants should be proud of their efforts as the championships really did deliver three days of incredible moments.”

In a sign of things to come, Currumbin and Alexandra Headlands placed first and second respectively in the All Age Relay event on Sunday morning. Tweed Heads and Coolangatta claimed bronze.

Currumbin’s Ava Usher dominated the Under 12 age category over the weekend, claiming an impressive haul of ten medals from 11 events, including six gold and the Under 12 Ironwoman title. Ava, who last year won medals in nine of her 11 events, joined nippers at the age of six, and one day aspires to become an ironwoman.

Alexandra Headlands finished top of the Sunshine Coast clubs, with gold in multiple beach relay events, the Under 15 Male Sprint and water events such as the Under 13 Surf Race and Under 14 Board Rescue.

Event hosts Burleigh Heads Mowbray Park won the March Past on the final morning of competition, ahead of Miami and Maroochydore.

The Albatross Nippers participated in the March Past for the first time at the 2019 Queensland Youth State Surf Life Saving Championships. The Albatross program, based at Nobby’s Beach, is designed to allow children with special needs to experience surf lifesaving.
