Surf Life Saving Queensland has announced that all Gold Coast beaches will remain closed today (April 1), due to poor water quality as well as large amounts of debris in the water.
SLSQ Gold Coast lifesaving services coordinator Nathan Fife said the decision had been made in the interests of public safety, and urged people to stay out of the water.
“We’re continuing to see unknown water quality and large amounts of debris in the water flowing in from the swollen creeks and rivers and, at the end of the day, it’s just not safe for people to be in the water at the moment,” he said.
“It’s not a decision that we’ve made lightly, and I can’t stress enough how important it is for people to stay out of the water.
“We will re-assess conditions again tomorrow morning and again make a decision that is in the best interests of public safety.”
