Lifesavers pay respects at Memorial Day

Volunteer surf lifesavers across Queensland Gold Coast will patrol local beaches one final time this weekend before the 2017/18 patrol season officially comes to a close on Monday.

To coincide with the last weekend of the patrol season, Surf Life Saving Queensland (SLSQ) this morning held its 6th annual Memorial Day services around the state, providing lifesavers with an opportunity to pay their respects to those who have lost their lives in the surf this season.

The official ceremonies were followed by volunteer surf lifesavers in full patrol uniform laying a red and yellow wreath of flowers in the surf as a mark of respect.

At the Coolangatta service on the Gold Coast, the Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter Service Queensland also performed a fly-over and dropped a wreath of their own into the ocean.
