Surf Life Saving Queensland (SLSQ) today announced Dave Whimpey had been appointed Chief Executive Officer of the organisation, effective July 8.
The appointment follows the resignation of long-standing CEO John Brennan, who stepped down from the role in February after 25 years of employment with SLSQ.
Mr Whimpey joins SLSQ with considerable not-for-profit leadership experience, having most recently held the position of CEO of the Brisbane Racing Club (BRC) for more than five years.
During this time, he worked with the Board of BRC to spearhead the transformation of the club, establishing a high-performance team culture and creating alternative revenue streams so that the club is self-sustaining into the future.
Boasting a strong commercial background and 25 years’ experience spanning both the public and private sectors, Mr Whimpey formerly held senior executive positions with Hilton, Jupiters, KPMG, Tabcorp, Coles and Brisbane Racing Club.
Mr Whimpey said he was now looking forward to extending his 10-year voluntary association with surf lifesaving into a professional one.
“As Patron of North Burleigh SLSC and a dad to three daughters who have participated in nippers, including one who will patrol next season, I’m well aware of the incredible work that volunteers perform to educate and protect beachgoers,” he said.
“The surf lifesaving movement has a proud history dating back over a century, with more than 140,000 lives saved during that time.
“SLSQ’s recent restructure will ensure the organisation continues to evolve and grow, saving lives across the next 100 years and beyond, and I’m honoured to have the opportunity to lead Surf Life Saving Queensland into its next chapter.”
SLSQ President Mark Fife OAM welcomed Mr Whimpey to the organisation.
“Earlier this year we commenced an extensive recruitment process to ensure strong leadership of our iconic organisation into the future and I congratulate Dave on his appointment to the role,” Mr Fife said.
“I’d like to thank our General Manager, Commercial, Kris Beavis, for his considerable efforts as Acting CEO throughout the recruitment process.”
