Surfers Paradise lifesaver wins Rescue of the Month award

Surfers Paradise lifesaver Scott Dineen has been announced as the recipient of Surf Life Saving Australia’s national Rescue of the Month award for March 2014.

It is the second time that Surfers Paradise Surf Life Saving Club has received the prestigious award, after being named the inaugural recipient of the honour earlier this year in January.

The announcement was made today (May 15) at the Parliamentary Friends of Surf Lifesaving quarterly event at Parliament House in Canberra, in front of a packed house of Senators and MPs.

The rescue deemed March 2014’s most remarkable took place on Saturday 22 March at 3.30pm.

Dineen observed a swimmer in difficulty south of the patrol area. At the same time a second swimmer was also observed by Graham Long who launched the club’s Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB) with crewman Warren Peters.

Negotiating plunging waves and a strong lateral sweep, Scott reassessed that the second swimmer was in greater difficulty. Scott made the decision to leave the first swimmer supported by his rescue board and proceeded to rescue and support the second swimmer until the IRB arrived. Graham and Warren transported the second swimmer to the beach for further medical treatment. Scott returned the first swimmer back to shore with the rescue board.

The remaining Patrol members responded with medical equipment, while Patrol Captain Danny Jones liaised with SurfCom to arrange further emergency medical treatment. The Patrol and City of Gold Coast Lifeguards provided oxygen therapy to the patients.

Scott and the Patrol members showed exceptional assessment of the situation and applied advanced rescue and medical skills.

The outstanding actions of the Scott Dineen and the Surfers Paradise patrol members on this occasion saved two lives.

Rescue of the Month is a national initiative to recognise the courageous and outstanding achievement that surf lifesavers and members perform on our coastal waterways every day.

Each month, the seven SLS states will award their respective Rescue of the Months, with winners automatically nominated for Surf Life Saving Australia’s national Rescue of the Month.

Surfers Paradise SLSC club captain Scott Andrews accepted the award on behalf of Scott Dineen and the Club.
